The Ice Maker Line Ruins More Vacations Than Airlines Do

It's amazing how many homeowners plan every detail of a trip — flights, itineraries, kids' snacks, sunscreen SPF, currency exchange — and never think about the pipes they're leaving behind.

The ones who do come home to the vacation memories. The ones who don't come home to a mopping job that costs more than the trip did.

Here's the 20-minute checklist we give our own customers before they leave.

1. Kill the main water supply

This is the single most important thing on this list. If you do nothing else, do this one.

Find your main water shut-off valve — usually near where the water line enters (garage, basement, or exterior wall). Turn it clockwise until it stops.

2. Send your water heater on vacation too

Most modern heaters have a vacation mode setting. It keeps the tank warm enough to prevent freezing but doesn't heat all the way. Saves energy + reduces stress on the tank.

Older tanks — turn the thermostat to its lowest setting.

3. Kill the ice maker

Ice maker lines are the #1 cause of "came home to a flooded kitchen" calls we get. Small plastic tubing under constant pressure = weakest link in your entire plumbing system.

There's usually a shut-off valve behind or under the fridge. Close it. If you can't find it, closing your main water (Step 1) handles this too.

4. Walk every fixture — one time only

Every faucet, toilet, dishwasher line, washing machine hose, refrigerator water line. Look for:

• Slow drips at faucet handles
• Running toilets
• Moisture or mineral crust at flexible line connections
• Any dampness under sinks or behind appliances

Find anything? Fix it BEFORE leaving. A drip that's "no big deal" becomes 1,400 wasted gallons over a 2-week trip.

5. Drain the disposal one last time

Run cold water + disposal for 10 seconds. Then pour a cup of white vinegar down. Let it sit 5 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

This kills bacteria and prevents that "back from vacation" smell — one of the most common complaints we hear after summer trips.

6. Recruit a neighbor

Even with water off, ask a trusted neighbor to walk through the house every 3-4 days. Ceilings sag before they burst. Damp carpet appears before mildew.
